Statement on Local Government Reorganisation in Nottingham and Nottinghamshire

Councils across the country have been advised by central government that it will be undertaking a review of the Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) programme nationally.
Government confirmed that it is still committed to LGR but outlined, in its announcement today (Monday 7 September), that decisions relating to four LGR areas will be ‘withdrawn’, and that a further 14 areas will be ‘paused’ while a review is carried out.
The Nottingham and Nottinghamshire programme is among those that have been paused while the review is undertaken. We now need time to digest the announcement and await further information from the government. While no timeline has been confirmed, the Secretary of State has confirmed a rapid review at pace.
We have an established positive relationship the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government (MHCLG) and will continue to work closely with them. We remain committed to working collaboratively across all nine councils to ensure we are well positioned for any future developments.
All nine councils across Nottingham and Nottinghamshire have invested significant time and effort in preparing for LGR – and we thank our teams and colleagues for their work. The government confirmed in parliament that our work so far is not wasted.
The Secretary of State has confirmed that updates regarding the review will be reported back to parliament at the earliest opportunity. As more information becomes available, we will provide further updates as soon as possible.
