Last updated: 22/6/2026

Rushcliffe Borough Council has joined organisations across the country to raise a flag to commemorate Armed Forces Week.

Local dignitaries gathered at Rushcliffe Arena today (June 22) to watch the ceremonial flag raising.

Mayor of Rushcliffe Cllr Richard Butler was joined by fellow members of the Council, representatives of the Royal British Legion including those from Colston Bassett, Owthorpe & Cotgrave and Ruddington and Council officers.

Armed Forces Week is an opportunity for everyone to show their support for those defending the UK and its interests as part of the Armed Forces community, which includes current service people, veterans, cadets and their families.

Celebrations also include Armed Forces Day which takes place this Saturday June 27, to help boost morale for service members and as a chance for communities to show their recognition.

In Rushcliffe it is again further marked by Saturday’s Proms in the Park event from 12.30pm to 9pm at Bridgford Park in West Bridgford, visit www.rushcliffe.gov.uk/promsinthepark for more information.

The Mayor said: “I was an honoured to raise the Armed Forces Day flag at Rushcliffe Arena, marking the beginning of an important week of celebration of our Armed Forces.

“The flag and our ceremony is symbol of the essential acknowledgement that we respect and honour our past and present service personnel who give so much to their country.

“Armed Forces Week allows us to say thank you and recognise the hard work of our Armed Forces and Veterans for the huge personal sacrifices they and their families have made and continue to ensure the interests of our country are defended.”
