Merchant Navy Day celebrated by councillors and dignitaries
Last updated: 3/9/2026
Councillors and dignitaries celebrated Merchant Navy Day today (September 3) honouring the brave men and women who kept our nation supplied in war and peace.
Mayor of Rushcliffe Cllr Richard Butler and Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) Leader Cllr Neil Clarke joined fellow Council dignitaries at Nottinghamshire County Council to fly the Red Ensign flag, marking this commemorative day.
The flag was also raised at Rushcliffe Arena this morning as part of the official day of remembrance to recognise the sacrifices made by seafarers in both World Wars and their continued importance today.

Run by The Seafarers’ Charity, this day also highlights the vital role seafarers play in our economy and in supporting the Royal Navy through the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.
