Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has awarded £5,000 from its Community Wellbeing Fund to support the delivery of free football sessions to help build young people’s confidence and participation in sport.
RBC allocated the grant to Nottingham Forest Community Trust who run the Premier League Kicks programme, helping to engage children and young people aged 8 to 16, in positive, healthy activities through professionally led football sessions.
Delivered by trained coaches and youth workers, the programme promotes physical activity, teamwork, and personal development in a safe and supportive environment.
Sessions also focus on building confidence, self-esteem and social skills, while workshops address key issues affecting young people, helping them develop more positive behaviours.
The funding reflects RBC’s ongoing commitment to youth development, community safety, and promoting healthier lifestyles across the Borough.
RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure & Wellbeing, ICT & Member Development, Councillor Jonathan Wheeler, recently attended a session at The South Wolds Academy and Sixth Form in Keyworth to see the programme in action.
Cllr Wheeler said: “This is a fantastic initiative giving boys and girls from ages 8 to 16 the opportunity to play football and take part in other multi-sport activities. It connects sports with education, training and employment.
“It’s vital for children and young people to learn new skills, enjoy being part of a team and experience the benefits of playing sport.
“As a Borough, we’re proud to be home of great sport with venues like the City Ground, Trent Bridge, Holme Pierrepont and many more.”
Calum Osborne, Chief Executive Officer at Nottingham Forest Community Trust added: “This additional funding will help us reach even more young people through Premier League Kicks and give them a safe place to play, grow, and connect with positive role models.
“These sessions make a real difference to confidence, wellbeing, and aspiration, and we’re proud to deliver programmes that support stronger, healthier communities across Rushcliffe.”
