80th anniversary of Victory Over Japan Day

Today (August 15) marks the 80th anniversary of Victory Over Japan Day and the formal end of World War II. Whilst VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe in May 1945, many thousands of armed forces personnel from across the Commonwealth and Allied nations were still involved in bitter fighting in the Far East.
Rushcliffe Borough Council's Cabinet Member and Armed Forces Champion Cllr Jonathan Wheeler reflects on this significant milestone and remembers the courage and sacrifice of all those who served and their families.
He said: "In May, we saw communities across Rushcliffe come together to mark Victory in Europe Day with street parties and celebrations. Although VJ Day is a more solemn day, it’s a chance to show that we continue to honour the legacy of those who came before us.
"As Armed Forces Champion for Rushcliffe, I’m proud to support anniversaries such as this, as they provide an opportunity for us all to reflect upon the sacrifices that people made to secure our freedom. Those sacrifices are still being made today, and we remain committed to supporting both veterans and service personnel.
"Rushcliffe Borough Council has achieved the Gold Award under the Armed Forces Covenant, demonstrating our exceptional support for our armed forces. Each year, we also proudly celebrate Armed Forces Day at our award-winning Proms in the Park event."
