Rushcliffe residents can still use cash for council services at local outlets

Rushcliffe Borough Council (RBC) has highlighted cash can still be used for council services at local outlets, even as under one per cent of residents use the payment method.
The Council has highlighted electronic payment is the main way residents and businesses wish to pay to use services but recognises some individuals may not be able to do so electronically.
It has reiterated its commitment to fairness and inclusion so residents can pay as they wish but highlighted existing arrangements at its council operating sites, including leisure centres, are working well.
Responding to a motion brought by Cllr Ted Birch at a Full Council meeting on Thursday (March 5) the Council’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Finance Cllr Davinder Virdi said: “Cash is still accepted for our services where it is practical and proportionate, including at our car parks, unlike some councils who have removed this flexibility.
“For most services payments can be made at local post offices and other outlets which means those few residents who need to use cash can still pay for our services conveniently
“We are committed to fairness, inclusion and accessible council services for residents in ways that work for them and provide the cash options where there is genuine demand and if there remains a business case to do so.
“We have a responsibility to manage public resources carefully, this means modernising services where appropriate and avoid introducing unnecessary costs. Cash is a more expensive means of payment for services than using electronic forms of payment and our position on methods of payment for all services will constantly be under review. Cash payments also create a greater risk of fraud and error.
“This considered approach contributes to a well-managed Council that has been able to freeze council tax for residents for the forthcoming year for the Rushcliffe element of the bill.”
