Ruddington florist receives RBC grant to boost energy efficiency

Last updated: 3/9/2025

A florist in Ruddington has received a funding boost from Rushcliffe Borough Council’s (RBC) Business Grants Scheme to invest in a modern refrigeration unit, helping to improve energy efficiency and sustainability.

RBC awarded Stems at 24, based on the village high street, nearly £1,500 for the project that was match-funded by the business with over £3,600 investment for the vital upgrade that will reduce electricity costs, stock wastage and increase the shop’s capacity for larger orders.

The project saw the replacement of an outdated system and works included installing a new ceiling mounted evaporator, condensate pump, condensing unit, digital controls and updated electrical wiring and copper piping to improve efficiency.

RBC’s Deputy Leader and Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Business and Growth Cllr Abby Brennan said: “We’re pleased to support Stems at 24 through our grants to help the business upgrade its old refrigeration unit that had stopped working and was in crucial need of being replaced.

“The new system is much more energy efficient and environmentally friendly and will help to minimise waste by ensuring all flowers and foliage are preserved and fresh for customers.

“It will also help the business expand its services for even more weddings and corporate events.”

Stems at 24 co-owner Shelley Johnson said: “The new refrigeration unit has been an absolute game changer for us, especially for prepping flowers and keeping them cool. It’s really helping us to reduce our waste which is really important to us and a core value of our business.”

Co-owner Carol Stanbridge added: “Our old fridge was over 70 years old so was in serious need of being upgraded. For us as a small independent business, the new unit has transformed our way of working to plan stock more effectively and take advantage of wholesale offers.

“Thank you to RBC for their support with this grant. It has really helped to futureproof our business and ensure we thrive as a key part of our local high street for years to come.”

RBC’s Business Grants Scheme was set up to help support and sustain existing businesses and is funded by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund.
