Abbey Park outdoor gym in West Bridgford opens with exciting new fitness facilities

Last updated: 28/8/2025

An outdoor gym at Abbey Park in West Bridgford has opened with exciting new fitness equipment thanks to the efforts of a local community association and supported by Rushcliffe Borough Council’s (RBC) ongoing investment into park and play facilities.

The gym now features an array of fitness activities such as a warm-up area, jumping platforms, sloping bars, low parallette bars and high seating and an inclusive street workout structure after Abbey Park Community Association drove forward the project.

It also includes inclusive parallel bars, an abs board, a wheelchair accessible calisthenics rig and freestyle bars at the facility on Buckfast Way.

It has prompted a new female fitness group to use the new facility, co-ordinated by association volunteer and local resident Ruth Kerry.

She said: “We are thrilled to have this additional equipment on Abbey Park. I realised many women might feel intimidated to use it on their own (as I did) so I hit upon creating a group targeting likeminded ladies.

“I’ve been amazed at the response, and we now have upwards of 30 women who have signed up. I’ve even had local children asking if a group could be set up for them too, which is wonderful. Hopefully we can work with RBC and Proludic to facilitate this.”

Anyone who wishes to join the group is encouraged to contact Ruth Kerry via the Abbey Park Local Facebook Group. The park can be accessed on the NCT number 5a bus which stops opposite the site.

RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Leisure & Wellbeing, ICT & Member Development Cllr Jonathan Wheeler joined the group at the opening of the new facility, supported by local councillors Cllr Penny Gowland and Cllr Julie Chaplain.

He said: “This latest addition highlights another milestone as part of over £1m of investment in our outdoor sport, wellbeing and leisure opportunities since 2021.

“It’s fantastic to have these new upgrades and we want even more people to enjoy our great facilities. Our parks and fitness spaces are the perfect places to meet friends, work out and have fun!

“The Abbey Park Community Association are a great example of a local group who meet twice weekly at the gym to exercise and socialise in the outdoors. It’s great to see them enjoying the facilities on their doorstep.

“The investment in additional inclusive equipment is important to us, so that all our residents can enjoy our wonderful exercise and play equipment.”

Works at the site are being completed by Bunny based equipment supplier Proludic Ltd who designed the updated features.
