Housing Standards

Our Environmental Health team is responsible for the assessment and improvement of private rented accommodation in our area.

Our objective is to make privately rented homes decent, safe and comfortable to live in.

The team deal with complaints regarding the poor condition of rental accommodation, these complaints include issues such as the presence of damp or mould, lack of heating, dis-repair, lack of fire detection or overcrowding.

We also deal with complaints regarding Blocks of Flats, Houses in Multiple Occupation (HMOs) and HMO Licensing.

In certain circumstances the team also investigates poor housing conditions in owner/occupied properties, but in all cases we consider the principles of our Housing Enforcement Policy 2024-2029 when taking any action.

New Legal Duties Under the Renters Rights Act 2025

Starting December 2025, landlords will be required to meet the Decent Homes Standard and comply with Awaab’s Law. This mandates prompt action to address hazards such as damp and mould. The Council has gained new enforcement powers to ensure landlords adhere to these standards. Tenants are encouraged to report any concerns directly to our Housing Standards team at environmentalhealth@rushcliffe.gov.uk

Rushcliffe Borough Council is actively preparing to enforce these new regulations. We are collaborating with a specialist agency to investigate cases of illegal eviction and harassment, safeguarding tenants’ rights and ensuring landlords understand their legal obligations.

If you are experiencing eviction threats or harassment, please contact us immediately at Find and Contact Us - Rushcliffe Borough Council. We are here to assist you, help resolve the issue, and ensure your landlord complies with the law.

If you’re a landlord, make sure you’re ready!
