Emergency Planning
Contents
Although we always try to keep disruption to an absolute minimum, there are occasions when circumstances outside our control (e.g. severe weather) can affect the services we provide.
We will do our utmost to inform people of any potential disruption. However, if you have any queries or concerns about a service you receive, please do not hesitate to contact us.
The Met Office’s National Severe Weather Warning Service (NSWWS) provides warnings of hazardous weather conditions.
The Environment Agency publishes a summary of flood warnings and river levels. Residents and businesses at risk of fluvial flooding are encouraged to register for warnings from the Floodline service. For further information on flooding, please refer to our frequently asked questions.
Seasonal driving advice is available from the AA and RAC. A map of gritting routes is available on Nottinghamshire County Council’s website.
Advice on animal welfare during severe weather is available from the Department for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs (Defra).
If you need to report disruption to utility supplies, please contact the following:
Water supplies: Severn Trent Water
Electricity supplies: Western Power Distribution
Gas supplies: National Grid
Utilities priority service registers
To help support vulnerable people during emergencies, the utility companies hold priority service registers. People on these lists receive additional help such as alternative water supply to their door during water outages.
If residents are pre-registered and their supplier knows they have health issues, are vulnerable or have essential medical equipment in their home, they can provide additional support.
Information on disruption to the highway network is published on the Nottingham Travelwise website. Updates are also available via the Nottinghamshire County Council and the Highways Agency websites.
Information on bus services is available from Nottingham City Transport and Trent Barton.
Updates on disruption to the rail network are available via National Rail enquiries.
Further information on travel and transport is available on Nottinghamshire County Council’s website.
Please visit Nottinghamshire County Council’s website for a list of school closures.
In the winter, it's even more important to plan journeys. We provide traffic reports - check information services before you travel.
Before you set off
Our website includes traffic reports, traffic flows, average speeds and the displays on motorway signs.
Stick to main roads where you can and avoid exposed routes.
Drive with care and respect the road conditions. It takes time to clear and treat roads with salt to reduce the risk of ice. Give snowploughs and crew space they need to help get you on the way. Avoid steep hills and exposed roads if possible.
Check weather updates
Check the weather at Met Office website or listen to local radio broadcasts.
Timing
Allow extra time for journeys in severe weather.
Is your vehicle ready for winter?
Check that your vehicle is in good running order before travelling.
Use POWDERY:
Make sure pets are safe and not distracting in cars.
Carry an emergency kit
Road and weather conditions may change
Use the Highways Agency's information services to check for delays and weather. Pay attention to changing road conditions and take care on bends and exposed roads.
