Business Rates Appeal Advice

There has been a new business rates appeal process in England from 1 April 2017 known as check, challenge, appeal. The Valuation Office Agency (VOA) deals with checks and challenges, while the independent Valuation Tribunal for England handles appeals. The guidance provided by the Valuation Office Agency explains the check challenge and appeal process.

If you require advice about whether to appeal against rateable values you can consult a reputable independent rating adviser. Please take care - there may be fraudsters operating in this area.

Agents who are members of the following should follow a mandatory code of practice:

  • Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS)
  • The Institute of Revenues, Rating and Valuation (IRRV)
  • The Rating Surveyors’ Association (RSA)

You must ensure that you continue to pay your business rates as billed while appealing.

You can find contact information for the Valuation Office Agency on their website.
