Council News
Leader's update
Welcome to your summer edition of Rushcliffe Reports.
I am exceptionally proud to be Leader of this local authority and how the community embodies our ethos of great place, great
lifestyle and great sport.
Therefore with Local Government Reorganisation (LGR) and the shape of our councils possibly changing in due course, our priority will always be you, the residents of the Borough, so you can continue to receive high quality services.
Whatever decision the government makes, we will do all we can to ensure you can still rely on a value for money Council. We are aware of the continuing cost of living pressures that affect us all and mindful of that we froze the Rushcliffe element of your council tax bill this year.
It includes providing you with another brilliant free events season. In the coming weeks and months we again welcome Proms in the Park on Saturday June 27, a Film and Food Festival on Saturday July 11 and Lark in the Park on Wednesday August 5. Find out more in the Events section.
In a fast-paced changing world, the environment remains a key part of our efforts to ensure we are playing our part to become carbon neutral and motivate others in the Borough to follow suit, find out more on our latest carbon reduction work.
Thank you for your sterling efforts with changes to bins in recent months. Not only are you recycling more glass than ever thanks to your new purple lidded bins we now collect at the kerbside, you’re helping us recycle more items in your new blue bins. A reminder of the changes is below in recycling on your doorstep.
Enjoy your summer and as ever if you have any questions or feedback on our services visit rushcliffe.gov.uk – still the fastest way
for your queries to be answered.
Cllr Neil Clarke MBE
Leader of The Council
You can now recycle even more from your doorstep!
Did you know? You can now recycle additional items in your blue dry recycling bin, including:
- Tetra Pak items such as drink cartons
- Plastic pots, tubs, food trays and toothpaste tubes
- Coloured plant pots and seed trays such as brown and grey – please note black plastic items are not accepted
- Aluminium foil and food trays
- Aluminium tubes, for example empty tomato purée tubes
Please wash the items wherever it's practical to do so before placing in your bin.
It’s all part of a Simpler Recycling initiative that is being rolled out across Nottinghamshire to create a consistent recycling system for all households.
This standardised approach will also improve efficiency by allowing more materials such as paper and cardboard, metal and tin cans, and plastic bottles to be collected together, reducing the need for multiple collections.
Recycling checker tool
Take a moment to review the updated list of materials you can now recycle from home. If you’re unsure, there is a new recycling checker tool available on the nottinghamshire.gov.uk/recyclingchecker
RBC Leader Cllr Neil Clarke, said:
“We already have one of the strongest recycling rates in the county, and I welcome these further improvements that allow
residents to recycle even more items using their existing blue bins.
“This builds on the success of our new kerbside glass recycling service, which has seen over 1550 tonnes of glass collected in
its first five months, an increase compared with the 1250 tonnes recycled over the same period last year through bring banks.
“Thank you for playing your part. Every small action to recycle helps protect our environment.”
RBC’s Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety, Cllr Rob Inglis, added: “Our aim is to reduce confusion, make recycling easier to understand, and ensure residents know exactly what goes in the blue bin.
“A consistent, county-wide waste system means we can continue using the single mixed blue recycling bin for most materials.
“As always, please ensure all items are dry, clean, and free from food residue.
“These changes give residents an extra opportunity to help us move even closer to achieving a 60% recycling rate, ahead of the introduction of food waste collections next year.”
Food Waste Collections - Coming in October 2027
We’re preparing to introduce a weekly kerbside food waste collection service across Rushcliffe from 1 October 2027, in line with the national Simpler Recycling legislation.
Each household will receive a small kitchen caddy (7 litre) and an external 23‑litre food waste caddy for weekly collections.
Until the service launches, please continue to manage food waste using sustainable options such as home composting or wormeries, or place food waste in your general grey bin.
We’ll continue to keep residents updated as we get closer to the launch of this new service.
Visit the Simpler Recycling page for further details.
Carbon clever projects continue as we aim to be carbon neutral by 2030
Our Carbon Clever journey to be carbon neutral as a Council by 2030 is continuing at pace.
Last year we announced the acquisition of sites in Upper Broughton and Kinoulton, the size of 30 football pitches, to plant over
40,000 trees and shrubs, named Rushcliffe Woods and Wolds Woods respectively that will offset carbon from our operations for
decades to come.
Meanwhile at our Rushcliffe Arena base a solar panel project is now producing half of the building’s energy courtesy of an East Midlands Combined Council Authority Mayoral Renewables Fund.
Last year we completed Cotgrave Leisure Centre, Sir Julien Cahn Pavilion in West Bridgford and Gamston Community Hall
decarbonation projects that will make the buildings ever more energy efficient.
There has been a 90% reduction in fleet emissions in the last two years and our Warm Homes local grants scheme has seen
householders benefit in East Leake and across the Borough. Home energy advice teams have attended community events.
Further EV Charge Points are set to be in place at Nursery and Bridgford Road car parks in West Bridgford soon and we’re also
facilitating Ethical Solar Loans at the Railway Heritage Centre in Ruddington.
Going forward we have plans for further solar projects at our Gresham Sports Pavilion, Edwalton Golf and Streetwise depot in Bingham.
Our Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety Cllr Rob Inglis said: “Longer-term sustainability of the Council’s carbon
offsetting is vital whilst also meeting our climate and ecological objectives.
“The £5m investment in Cotgrave and Keyworth Leisure Centres last year was a great example of where reducing carbon
output was a priority and it’s important we make all our community facilities as green as they can be.
“Ideally we want the Borough to be carbon neutral by 2050 in line with UK Government’s international commitments and we are proud we are among those leading the way in the Borough to ensure a better environment for future generations.”
Funding boost to inclusive community project in West Bridgford
A West Bridgford community project has received a funding boost to support its work creating a safe and inclusive space
for adults with additional needs.
We awarded £1,000 through our Community Wellbeing Fund to support Meet, Greet and Eat in running a weekly pop‑up shop, held
every Friday from midday to 2pm at the West Bridgford Young People’s Centre.
The initiative promotes social connection and wellbeing by helping individuals develop essential life skills, including communication, teamwork, customer service, literacy and numeracy. It also raises awareness of healthy eating, food waste and environmental responsibility, while providing affordable redistributed food for local residents.
Recognising its outstanding community spirit, Meet, Greet and Eat was named Community Group of the Year at the Celebrating Rushcliffe Awards 2024.
Our Deputy Leader Cllr Abby Brennan said: “Farah and the team do a fantastic job delivering this successful project, which
benefits volunteers and residents alike.
“We’re really pleased to support the project through our Community Wellbeing Fund. The group offers a supportive environment
where volunteers can gain confidence, build life skills, and help people feel more connected.”
Project Coordinator Farah Jamil said: “Our project aims to help as many people as possible by providing a fun, safe space where volunteers can socialise, learn new skills and enjoy their time together.
“Thank you to Rushcliffe Borough Council for this grant. It allows us to continue running our community supermarket, offering affordable food and essentials to support those on a tight budget.”
In our latest funding round, we awarded £35,000 to 15 projects that are helping to tackle the cost of living, loneliness and
isolation across the Borough.
Supported by the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the programme provides financial support to parish councils, community groups and organisations delivering initiatives focused on volunteering, social action and community engagement.

West Park partnership to welcome future generations of cricketers in Notts
West Park partnership to welcome future generations of cricketers in Notts West Park in West Bridgford is now a new home for future generations of cricketers in our partnership with Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club (NCCC).
The club approached us last year to explore greater use of the venue on Loughborough Road and has now received a long-term 25-
year lease to host women’s cricket matches and a wider range of cricket opportunities to the community at all levels.
This will be whilst still retaining West Bridgford Legion Cricket Club as an important community partner at the site.
It currently offers modern community facilities including the recently refurbished Sir Julien Cahn Pavilion, a ten-wicket grass pitch with single artificial wicket and launched last year, a five-lane fully enclosed non-turf practice area.
The site will help to meet growing demand for facilities caused by increased participation in the game, with children’s cricket sessions delivered for young people of all ages and abilities.
West Park will also become a home for Nottinghamshire’s disability cricket offerings, the ACE Programme which aims to drive African-Caribbean participation, and a newly-formed LGBTQ+ team.
The venue will stage matches for Nottinghamshire’s boys’ sides up to U16 level, while also driving the continued expansion of opportunities for women and girls by hosting age-group and Academy fixtures for The Blaze.
Leader Cllr Neil Clarke, said: “Rushcliffe is the home of great sport in Nottinghamshire, and we’re pleased this partnership with
Nottinghamshire CCC at West Park will give even more opportunities to more people to play cricket.
“It highlights a strategic growth opportunity that aligns perfectly with our Leisure and Playing Pitch strategies and recently adopted draft Sport and Tourism Charter.
“It also aligns with building on the strong and positive relationship through continued collaboration with major sporting partners
and strengthening our collective reputation as a prime destination for sport nationally."
Hello again from the Rushcliffe Neighbourhood Policing Team
“Our three main borough priorities have remained as theft of bikes, shoplifting, and ASB in town centres. Whilst some progress has been made around these targets using Problem Management Plans, Notts Police has seen a marked increase in calls for service in the last three months, which has stretched our resources across all departments, so our Neighbourhoods teams have been supporting all areas of business to ensure response times to incidents are as strong as they can be.
European football has now come to an end, however officers from across the force have supported these matches, and gained
valuable public order policing experience for major sporting events.
The last quarter of 2026 has seen a lot of challenges for the team to take on, with issues of bike and motorbike theft increasing, as well as an increase in incidents of burglary, which is always something my team will tackle as a priority.
Regardless of any other work, Burglary will always be a top focus for us, and my team have changed shifts, and worked longer hours in order to tackle the current rise.
Dozens of arrests have been made linked to the groups engaged in the theft issues we’ve seen, and there are a host of cases
working their way through the courts. I’m always keen, however, to ensure that people are aware of the best crime prevention advice, so if you visit the Notts Police website, and search for ‘crime prevention’, you’ll find a large amount of advice and support there.
Officers from our NPT supported colleagues from Notts Fire & Rescue, as well as other agencies with the fire at the Hathernware
Industrial Estate in April. Again, I’d like to thank the local community for their support and understanding during what was a major
incident for agencies involved. Thank you.”
Inspector Timothy Cuthbert
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector for Rushcliffe

In this latest round, support will enable further enhancements including additional accommodation, improved accessibility to
changing facilities, a more welcoming and functional reception area, inclusive spaces to better support participants with additional
needs.
Our Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Finance Cllr Davinder Virdi added: “It is fantastic that we can keep helping to add growth across
Rushcliffe through the CIL by supporting local groups such as Notts Gymnastics Academy.

thoughtfully designed to reflect a strong connection to nature and wildlife.
The crematorium offers a modern, peaceful setting for farewells, surrounded by maturing planting, flourishing wildflowers, open grassed areas and thriving wildlife.

treasure hunt, wildlife crafts including bug hotel building, bird and wildlife discovery boards, and guided facility tours.
Rushcliffe Oaks is led by a compassionate, professional team offering dignified support to families, alongside a monthly ‘Chance

bereavement.
The continued success of Rushcliffe Oaks has been underpinned by the trust and support of management, the dedication and

Further support for town and village centres
It’s an exciting time for the Borough as we work with partners to deliver vital projects to help shape our towns and villages for the future.
We are finalising West Bridgford’s Masterplan guiding future development and growth taking into account local feedback from businesses, councillors and community groups to create a list of possible improvements in West Bridgford’s town centre.
We continue to look at options for increasing accessibility to Bingham town centre and improving Radcliffe-on-Trent town centre.
Additionally, East Leake, Ruddington and Keyworth are also being supported with a dedicated visit from the Institute of Place
Management who will prepare reports for each centre and suggest activity and improvements for each village.
This builds on work already undertaken on over £10m of investment in regeneration projects in Cotgrave, which saw a brand-new
shopping precinct completed in 2020.

Dog owners in Rushcliffe warned pick up after your pet or face £100 fine
Dog owners in Rushcliffe are being reminded to pick up after their pooch and carry a bag or have other means to collect their waste or face a possible £100 fine.
We have thanked the vast majority of owners who always responsibly pick up after their pet but aware unfortunately not all follow the rules.
Action around it continues on engaging and educating dog owners on their responsibilities, responding to complaints, monitoring hotspot areas and applying the fixed penalties where necessary.
There are also patrols to ensure dogs are kept on a lead in the current ‘dogs on lead’ specified areas such as at Rushcliffe Country Park and always in line with local signage at each site.
Dog fouling on public footpaths and playing fields can cause many problems and in the worst cases can lead to blindness due to an
infection called toxocariasis caused by the round worm Toxocara Canis found in dog faeces.
A Borough-wide Dog Control Public Space Protection Order (PSPO), exists for all residents’ protection. Measures include a maximum of six dogs can be walked at any one time and four in some locations including Gresham Sports Park and Alford Road in West Bridgford.
The PSPO also allows for further action to be taken on those who do not observe dog exclusion zones which apply to all children's
play areas, multi-use games areas, skate parks and gym equipment zones which are either fenced or enclosed across the Borough.
Our Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Environment and Safety Cllr Rob Inglis said: “Thank you to the vast majority of dog owners who take
their responsibilities seriously and to the minority who flout the rules, remember we monitor and apply fines, including for those who don’t carry bags.
“We are very keen to continue to protect residents from dog fouling, it’s unsightly and a health risk and we will always take action to minimise problems where we can, especially when there are any localised issues identified.”
Find out more and how to report dog fouling issues.
Healthcare
Beyond Healthcare: A New Wellbeing Movement
While healthcare remains essential, growing evidence suggests that wellbeing is also shaped by human connection, movement, purpose, creativity and having supportive communities around us. The World Health Organization has increasingly highlighted the importance of social connection and belonging as important factors influencing both physical and mental health.
The Rushcliffe Social Prescribing Community Hub continues to grow as a welcoming community space that works alongside local GP practices and health services to help residents access practical, preventative support within everyday life.
Based at the West Bridgford Young People’s Centre, the Hub’s weekly Monday drop-in, running during term time only, offers an
informal opportunity to explore wellbeing activities, community support and local guidance services without the need for a referral or formal appointment.
Sessions have included mindful movement and breath, therapeutic yoga, creative wellbeing activities, health education workshops and outdoor wellbeing sessions designed to help people manage stress, build confidence and reconnect with what helps them feel well.
Alongside the wellbeing programme, residents can also access practical support around employment and wellbeing, Adult Social Care, community connection services, Attendance Allowance and Blue Badge guidance.
One local woman in her 40s initially attended seeking employment support after struggling with stress and unhappiness at work. Through the Hub, she later accessed meditation sessions, therapeutic yoga, creative wellbeing activities and additional emotional wellbeing support. Reflecting on her experience, she shared: “I wasn’t going to come, but I’m very pleased that I did now.”
As demand for prevention-focused and community-led support continues to grow, Rushcliffe Social Prescribing remains committed to building accessible opportunities that help people feel healthier, more connected and better supported within their local community.

A partnership involving South Notts Place-Based Partnership and the Rushcliffe Dementia Action Network (RDAN) has been successful in securing The National Lottery Heritage funding for an exciting research project: The 2-year research project will develop practical resources to help parks, outdoor spaces and nature reserves to become more dementia-friendly.
The project is being led by the Association for Dementia Studies (University of Worcester) in collaboration with some influential national charities and green space organisations including The National Trust, Natural England, Green Flag Award, The National Forest Company and Dementia Adventure. The RDAN Green Memory Café at Rushcliffe Country Park is one of the inspirations behind the research project.
This new study will create free, practical resources and tools to help outdoor spaces become dementia-friendly and inclusive,
including an environmental self-assessment tool, an app, training videos and case studies.
It will also aim to encourage organisations to collaborate and share good practice, while increasing visitor numbers through
improved inclusivity. Scan the QR code below for more details.
Rushcliffe Dementia Action Network (RDAN) support Park Run!
On a beautiful sunny morning at Rushcliffe Country Park, the RDAN team welcomed participants as they crossed the finish
line of the parkrun on Saturday May 16. With warm smiles, bottles of water, and tasty treats on hand, the team also shared
valuable information and advice about dementia support and ways to reduce risk.
Pictured below are Gwynneth Owen and local GP and RDAN volunteer Jill Langridge, who had just completed the 5km run.

Housing
More affordable homes for diverse local needs
We’re continuing to make strong progress in delivering more affordable housing across Rushcliffe, helping local people find homes that meet their needs and circumstances.
By working closely with developers and housing partners, we’re supporting a wide range of affordable housing options that reflect the diverse needs of our communities. This includes homes for rent, as well as opportunities for people to take their first step onto the property ladder.
In recent years, the number of affordable homes being delivered has increased significantly. Completions rose from 106 homes in 2020/21 to 293 in 2024/25, giving a real boost to the supply of affordable housing in the borough. We’re keen to build on this progress, especially as many residents continue to feel the pressure of rising living costs.
We’ve also seen strong growth in Shared Ownership homes, an increasingly popular and accessible route into home ownership.
Numbers grew from 58 homes in 2020/21 to 125 in 2025/26.
Most of these homes are secured through planning agreements with developers, known as Section 106 agreements, which help ensure new developments include a mix of affordable housing. By working with developers early in the process, we can help make sure new homes are well designed, accessible, and suitable for both individuals and families.
For rented homes, we establish nomination rights so that local households on our housing register are prioritised, helping those most in need access housing in line with our allocations policy. For home ownership, first homes are sold directly by developers, while shared ownership properties are offered by housing associations, with both subject to eligibility criteria.
We continue to monitor delivery closely to make sure homes remain genuinely affordable over the long term and that developers meet their commitments. This work is supported by strong partnerships and oversight through our scrutiny committees, helping us create sustainable and inclusive communities.
Looking ahead, we remain committed to working openly and in partnership with residents, developers, and housing providers to help shape growing communities that work for everyone.

Over 60 impactful projects delivered across the Borough through UKSPF
Between 2022-2026, we were awarded over £4.3m in grant funding from the Government as part of the UK Shared Prosperity Fund (UKSPF) and Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF) to support our local area. This investment has delivered a wide range of benefits for residents, businesses, and visitors alike.
Through this programme, we’ve provided grant funding to more than 60 projects across the borough, each making a positive
impact on our communities and economy, including:
- A new inclusive play area and outdoor gym in the heart of Shelford, enhancing local recreational facilities and helping to create a more connected, active community for residents of all ages.
- Funding for free inclusive dance and movement classes delivered by IMPACD CIC across the Borough designed for older adults, people living with dementia, carers and anyone experiencing loneliness, low mood, or limited mobility.
- Several businesses across the Borough received support to expand operations, enhance production and create new local
jobs. - Support for Groundwork Five Counties Green Doctor project offering free energy advice and support to local households to help residents save energy and reduce bills.
- Improvements at the award-winning Framework Knitters Museum in Ruddington which include a new patio, an accessible path for wheelchair users and prams, and a gazebo available for hire by local groups and businesses, alongside upgrades to its digital accessibility.
- As part of our Safe Hearts in Sport initiative improving accessibility, new defibrillators were installed and existing devices upgraded with new batteries, paediatric pads and prep kits at 14 sports venues across the Borough. Coaches and volunteers also received training to build awareness and confidence in responding to cardiac emergencies.
Our Deputy Leader and Cabinet Portfolio Holder for Business and Growth Cllr Abby Brennan said: “We’re pleased to support a
wide variety of meaningful projects across the Borough through UKSPF and REPF. These initiatives are helping to enhance quality of life through community-focused improvements, while also strengthening our local economy through targeted business support.
“The impact of this funding will extend far beyond the life of the programme, with residents set to benefit from these projects for many years to come.”
