Air Quality Monitoring Data

Nitrogen dioxide monitoring - what we do

Rushcliffe Borough Council monitors nitrogen dioxide (NO2) as part of the Environment Act 1995 and the National Air Quality Regulations 2000 & the Air Quality (Amendment) Regulations 2002.

We monitor the local air quality of the borough using a network of NO2 diffusion tubes placed adjacent to roads, where there is a combination of high traffic flows and relevant public exposure.

It should be noted that NO2 is also produced by the oxidation of nitric oxide (NO) and they are collectively known as NOX. There is a complex chemical relationship between emissions of NOX and the resulting concentrations of NO2. The main sources of nitrogen dioxide (NO2) are road transport and power generation.

NO2 is associated with adverse health effects and these can be long term (chronic) and short term (acute). The effects are on the respiratory system and generally may increase the symptoms of asthma and lung disease.

We publish our monitoring data in our Annual Status Report which must be submitted to Defra for approval each year. Our Annual Status Reports can be viewed on the Air Quality Reports page.

Our data can also be viewed at Air Quality in Nottinghamshire.
