Abandoned Vehicles

How can you tell if a vehicle is abandoned?

A vehicle may be considered abandoned if:

  • it has no keeper on DVLA’s database and is untaxed - check vehicle tax online
  • it’s stationary for a significant amount of time
  • it’s significantly damaged, run down or unroadworthy, for example has flat tyres, missing wheels or broken windows
  • it’s burned out
  • a number plate is missing

If you think that a vehicle has been abandoned, tell us - you can report an abandoned vehicle online or call 0115 981 9911.

Often vehicles are reported to us that are parking concerns and not abandoned, in this situation please see below:

Badly parked vehicles

If a vehicle is simply badly parked, broken down, or untaxed, it has not necessarily been abandoned.
If you see a vehicle that has been parked badly and is causing an obstruction, you should phone Notts Police on 101, see also Parking issues and abandoned vehicles | Nottinghamshire Police or contact the Nottinghamshire County Council as below who are the Highway authority for most roads in Nottinghamshire.
Untaxed vehicles should be reported online at the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency website, on 0870 240 0010 or by email to vehicles.dvla@gtnet.gov.uk or using the online form Report an untaxed vehicle - GOV.UK
