21 May 2019

The new Mayor of Rushcliffe, Cllr Mrs Christine Jeffreys, has said it is “awesome” to have been elected to office for the forthcoming 12 months.

In a ceremony in the Council Chamber at Rushcliffe Arena on Tuesday (May 21), she accepted the position from 2018/19 incumbent Cllr Mrs Maureen Stockwood.

The Cotgrave Ward councillor has nominated Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance and Headway, the brain injury association, as her chosen charities for the year.

As the ‘first citizen’ of the Borough she will attend many official engagements during her term of office ranging from 100th Birthday parties, opening fetes and charity events to attending other civic functions and events.

It is the second time she has accepted the role, having been Mayor in 2007/08.

She said: “It is a great honour and humbling experience to represent over 114,000 people across the Borough, it’s awesome.

“I want to reach out to so many of the lonely people in our communities and engage with as many people in Rushcliffe community and raise funds for the charities.

“The air ambulance provides such a crucial service to those whose lives are at risk or in danger in emergencies and Headway make a huge difference to those who have suffered brain injuries, they are two wonderful causes for which I hope I can raise as much as possible."

Cllr Sue Mallender was elected as Deputy Mayor for the next 12 months and expressed her honour of being entrusted with the role.
