Check if your Christmas wrapping paper is recyclable with this quick trick

24 December 2018

Rushcliffe Borough Council is reminding residents to test their wrapping paper before throwing it away this Christmas by scrunching it into a ball to check if it is recyclable.

Wrapping paper can be placed in the blue bin if it can be ‘scrunched’ into a ball without immediately unravelling.Examples of recyclable and non-recylable wrapping paper

Households across the Borough are able to recycle paper, mixed card, food and drink cans or plastic bottles using their blue bins.

However, if the wrapping paper unravels immediately, or appears to contain foil, then it cannot be recycled and must be placed in the grey bin.

Cllr Roger Upton, Portfolio Holder for Housing, Planning and Waste Management said: “Many of us use a lot of wrapping paper at Christmas, so it’s important to protect the environment and try to utilise our blue bins.

“By performing this quick test on your wrapping paper you can help Rushcliffe to recycle effectively this festive season.”

It is important that only the following items are placed into the blue bin, as other materials will not be recycled and may prevent the bin from being collected:

  • Some wrapping paper
  • Newspapers and magazines
  • Envelopes and writing paper
  • Catalogues and directories
  • Junk mail
  • Cereal and egg boxes
  • Kitchen and toilet roll tubes
  • Flat pack cardboard
  • Food tins
  • Drinks cans
  • Empty aerosol cans
  • Milk and soft drinks bottles
  • Shower gel, shampoo and conditioner bottles
  • Household cleaning product bottles
  • Cosmetic and toiletry bottles
  • Yoghurt and margarine tubs

Across the holidays there are some changes to blue and grey bin collections.
