Do I need to apply?
You need to apply for Building Regulation permission to carry out most building work, but there are some exceptions. You may need planning permission but not building regulations consent, building regulations consent but not planning consent, both or neither.
To help you we now have a householder enquiry system. You complete a Householder enquiry form giving details of the work and then we check the requirements for you, and notify you of what (if any) consent is needed within 10 working days of receiving the form. We recommend that you use the householder enquiry system even for simple works, as our written confirmation (particularly if an application was not required) is often needed by solicitors when a property is later sold.
