Local plan
1996 Local Plan
The Rushcliffe Borough Local Plan was adopted in June 1996 and gives guidance as to the Borough Council's policies and approach to land use planning and the environment, and in particular the provision of land for housing and employment in the area covered by Rushcliffe Borough Council. The chapters of the plan can be downloaded as PDF files at the foot of the page.
While the plan covered the period up to 2001, six of its policies saved for continued use in determining planning applications.
- Local Plan: Introduction
- Local Plan: Environment
- Local Plan: Housing
- Local Plan: Employment
- Local Plan: Shopping
- Local Plan: Movement
- Local Plan: Community recreational and tourist facilities
- Local Plan: Energy, water and telecommunications

Saved policies
On 21 September 2007 the Borough Council received notification that the Secretary of State was issuing a direction that 6 policies of the Rushcliffe Borough Local Plan (1996) should be saved beyond 27 September 2007.
Under the Planning and Compulsory Purchase Act 2004, which brought in the system of Local Development Frameworks (LDF), the policies in the adopted Rushcliffe Borough Local Plan (1996) would expire on the 27 September 2007 unless they had been formally saved.
The Secretary of State’s assessment of whether saved policies should be extended is based upon the criteria set out in Planning Policy Statement 12 and the Department for Communities and Local Government Protocol on saving policies. The Policies of the Rushcliffe Replacement Local Plan (1996) which the Secretary of State proposed to save are:
- ENV15 GREEN BELT
- H1 HOUSING ALLOCATIONS
- E1 EMPLOYMENT LAND PROVISION
- E4 TOLLERTON AIRFIELD
- E7 REDEVELOPMENT OF EMPLOYMENT SITES
- E8 LANGAR AIRFIELD.
The direction letter from the secretary of state makes clear that following 27 September 2007 the extended policies should be read in context. Where policies were adopted some time ago, it is likely that material considerations, in particular the emergence of new national and regional policy and also new evidence, will be afforded considerable weight in decisions.
Those policies of the Rushcliffe Borough Local Plan (1996) not listed in the Direction therefore expired on 27 September 2007.
