Street Sweeping

Information about street sweeping, litter clearance, and litter/dog bins.

The council’s Streetwise team carries out street sweeping throughout the borough. They are also responsible for the provision and emptying of litter and dog bins.

Street sweeping

The Council's streets are divided into zones, depending on the volume of traffic using the streets each day. The more frequently the road is used, the more often it will be swept.  However, if the visual appearance of an area should deteriorate to an unacceptable level between cleans, it will be cleaned up within a certain time, as laid down in a Litter Code of Practice under the Environmental Protection Act 1990.

If you feel your road is not swept satisfactorily, or you have any other comments or questions about street sweeping, please complete our online form, or contact the Streetwise team by phone, fax, email or post.

Litter

Litter ranges in size from a single sweet wrapper, to a bag full of rubbish. The Environmental Protection Act of 1990 states that if a person drops, throws, deposits, or leaves anything that causes defacement in a public place, they are committing a littering offence. So always try to use a litter bin or take litter home to dispose of it.

To report a problem with a litter bin or to request a litter bin at a new location, please use the online form or contact the Streetwise team by phone, fax, email or post.

Leaf sweeping and blossom clearance

The Streetwise team provides a leaf clearance service each autumn throughout the streets of the Borough. This service takes place between early November and early January. Each spring a blossom sweep is carried out.

To report problems with leaves and blossom, please use the online form or contact the Streetwise team by phone, fax, email or post.
