The incident was reported to police at around 8.55am on Friday 7 August, when a member of the public reported having seen two men interfering with the cash machine outside the Co-op store on Main Road before driving off.
When officers arrived, they found the machine had been fitted with a card reader on the throat (where you put the card in), while a bar camera had been installed above the keypad.
This would have enabled the offenders to scan people’s card details and record their PIN without them ever knowing it was happening. The offenders could then return later to retrieve the information, giving them both the card details and PIN.
The two men were both Asian, with one being around 6ft 2in tall, in his late 20s, with dark hair and a thin beard. He was wearing a black jacket, jeans and a knitted jumper with dark grey panels and navy sleeves.
The second man was also in his late 20s, about 5ft 7in tall, and was wearing brown trousers, a brown jacket, and white trainers. He had very short dark hair, which was shaved at the back and receding at the front.
They left the scene in a black Seat Ibiza.
Neighbourhood Policing Inspector Jeff Haywood said: “I am not aware of this type of incident being a major issue in the area, and I would ask anyone who witnessed this incident or who has any information about who these men are to contact the police immediately.
“People can massively reduce the chance of having their card or their details stolen when they use a cash machine by taking some really simple steps.
- Always cover your hand when inputting your PIN to stop it being read by a camera, and be aware of anyone standing nearby who may be trying to read your PIN.
- If your card isn’t returned, report it immediately as it may have been ‘trapped’. As soon as you leave the ATM, the offenders will retrieve it and withdraw money from your account almost immediately.
- Look very carefully for anything that doesn’t appear standard on the ATM, although some of these are extremely sophisticated. If you do find a suspicious device on an ATM, don't remove it but alert the bank or the police immediately.”
Anyone who saw these two men, or who has any information about this incident, is asked to contact Nottinghamshire Police on 0115 9670999 ext 6711. Alternatively, they can call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555111.
