The Local Government Act 2000 required all local authorities to produce a community strategy within the Government's UK Sustainable Development Strategy 'A Better Quality of Life'. All across the country a network of linkages from national government level to grass roots level was envisaged.
Below national level, Regional Government Offices were set up. Our local Government Office is called GO-EM (Government Office for the East Midlands). Each region also has its own regional assembly and development agency. (For our region these are called the East Midlands Regional Assembly and the East Midlands Development Agency respectively).
Below this, at sub-regional level, there are strategic partnerships. Our sub-regional strategic partnership (an SSP) is called the Greater Nottingham Partnership (GNP). Please have a look at their web sites for more information.
Local authorities were seen as best placed to form local partnerships who would not only write their local community strategies (as they would know the particular challenges their Boroughs faced) but could also make sure action was taken accordingly.
Rushcliffe Borough Council took the lead on forming the Rushcliffe Community Partnership (which is this local authority's LSP). Our neighbouring district councils (Gedling and Broxtowe) have their own local strategic partnerships and these (together with the Hucknall part of Ashfield) all link into the Greater Nottingham Partnership (GNP).
Consultation
We are currently working on the Sustainable Community Strategy Refresh. A questionnaire appeared in the Winter edition of Ruschliffe Reports 2008 and that consultation closed on 1 December 2008. The refreshed draft strategy will go to the Board Meeting on 16 June 2009 and after that it will be posted on this website for your comments.
