Rushcliffe Borough Council has joined thousands of people across the globe by celebrating Commonwealth Day and raising a Commonwealth flag.

Dignitaries and members of the public came together at the council’s base at Rushcliffe Arena in West Bridgford to hoist the flag in a shared celebration of vast diversity and strong unity of the Commonwealth.

The Mayor of Rushcliffe Cllr Barrie Cooper, Deputy Lord Lieutenant Commander of Nottinghamshire Judith Swan and Rushcliffe Borough Council Leader, Cllr Simon Robinson all attended as part of the initiative.

Deputy Mayor Cllr Maureen Stockwood, Cllr John Thurman, Cllr Marie Males, Cllr John Stockwood, Cllr Roger Upton and Rushcliffe Borough Council Chief Executive, Allen Graham also supported the raising of the flag.

Now in its fifth year, the Fly A Flag celebration recognises the 53 independent countries all working together under this year’s Commonwealth Day theme ‘Towards a Common Future’.

It also is a tribute to the values of peace, democracy and equality shared across the Commonwealth.
